I was thinking something along the lines of Eda having a nightmare (about her past with Raine and all the damage the owl beast has done etc.) and Raine comforting her about it?

Raine woke up to the feeling of Eda thrashing in the nest next to them. They sighed to themself- Not out of misery, no. They were just concerned for their girlfriend.

"Eda" they said soothingly, reaching over to shake her gently while still firm enough to actually work. "Wake up, Calamity" they muttered, getting a pitiful whimper from the wild witch in response. "Come on"

Eda shot up with a strangled yelp, panting heavily from the residual panic of the dream that had plagued her only moments before.

"Hey, hey, hey" Raine soothed, wrapping their arms tight around her, which she appreciated. The pressure helped to ground her back to reality. It reminded her that Raine was there with her and that she was safe and okay.

She halfheartedly noticed some feathers poking out around her neck and blindly grasped around the outside of the nest til she located her night bottle of the potion- She always kept one potion near her nest in case of stuff like this.

She drank a bit of it, slightly miserably as it didn't taste that good, and sighed in relief as the feathers went away. Then she remembered that Raine was still there with her, their arms no longer locked around her.

"Hi" she said timidly, avoiding their gaze. They chuckled.

"Exciting dreams?"

"You could say that" she smiled weakly before yawning. It was still the middle of the night, and her nightmare had taken a lot out of her.

"Do you wanna talk about it?"

"The usual" Eda shrugged. "The owl beast, Lilith's whole bullshit, and... You" she listed off, scanning Raine's face for anger over the last part but getting nothing of the sort. They just nodded in understanding.

"Lie down" they instructed. Eda raised an eyebrow.

"Raine, I don't think this is the best hour for-"

"Not like that, you pervert" Raine teased her. "I wanna cuddle you" they continued. Eda smiled at them and complied, lying on her side next to them and nuzzling her face into the crook of their neck as they wrapped an arm around her.

"This is nice..."

"See?" Raine smiled. "I knew this would work"

"You're a genius, Rainestorm"

"I know"

syndrome from incredibles, Thanos in the comics, mad hatter from Batman, tighten from Megamind, frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame, Red Hulk, parasite from superman and Ozai all of these villains are pathetic but they work for some reason I cannot place. A lot of stories try and write villains that are pathetic but also scary and it doesn't work- I love Starscream he can be an amazing character (he can be sympathetic or a straight up monster he can be lame but still threatening etc) and I like most versions but God can writers screw him up and he can fall flat (i love tfp i swear but god i hate their starscream! He just didn't work for me! Megatron and knockout are cool tho) Belos for some reason doesn't work for me at all- I know he should be scary while the fandom is wrong about him being a colonizer/cult leader/a dictator (he's not stop using words you dont understand the meaning of)and how insane it is that he's in a kids show (watch more cartoons there's villains darker than him) he's still trying to commit genocide and he's abusive and he's at his core got very little depth or complexity- he's really just an isekai character gone wrong- a pathetic guy with a hero complex and emotional baggage who becomes a villain- but he just didn't work for me. Neither does Jacob Hopkins- he's just Ronaldo from SU if he was written to be a straight up hate sink. I'm a lesbian latina with autism and was raised with a different sect of christan beliefs from him- I know historically this guy would have murdered me and i know he should work but something about him didn't stick the landing! The main thing I think about with belos isn't 'wow this guy is a great villain' it's 'can y'all stop being weirdly ableist toward this old man' or 'why do so many of y'all wanna fuck this man he's ugly' and dont get me started on mcu villains - their version of the mandarin, she-hulk's dumb men rights activists on reddit (seriously that's the scariest villain you can come up with? Like revenge porn is evil but really? I don't like the term man-baby- I have personal issues with how the term has been used in ableist ways- but yeah erm man babies on reddit are the best you can do for a villain? That's freaking stupid) and OMG Sutur in Ragnarok was terrible etc etc- these villains all suck!

How do you write villains that are pathetic but still work? How do write villains who are at their core whiny insecure losers but still work as detestable threatening villains? Like marvel made a character whose whole thing was that he's an incel work but so many other stories fail to write that stuff. Part of me thinks it's because these stories are desperate to make their villain into a hate sink joke but still make them scary and it fails but Tighten and Red Hulk are right there and there's no way the writers weren't purposely writing hate sinks with them! And they work! Why doesn't belos?

Yang Xiao Long-RWBY

Qualifications:

She is canonically wlw (has been for years but specifically kissed and got together with her now girlfriend in the latest season) and uses a prosthetic arm and has been shown to struggle with PTSD due to the traumatic nature of losing it during the show.

Canonically had her right arm chopped off, uses a prosthetic. Has PTSD. Is canonically in a WLW relationship.

She has a canon girlfriend and canonically has a prosthetic arm and PTSD

She's canonically sapphic (part of a recently canonised wlw slowburn relationship) and is an amputee (due to events from the 3rd season finale) who wears a robotic prosthetic. She also suffers from PTSD which is explored in the show

Propaganda:

I will keep on submitting Yang to relevant brackets until I die. RWBY has plenty of strengths and weaknesses with writing, especially Yang's recovery arc, but instead of forcing her to push past her trauma and enter the battlefield immediately, we see her struggle with it, take time to process, and not be pushed into repression and when she chooses to wear her prosthetic, chooses to train to ready herself, and chooses to seek out her family and save lives, she isn't perfectly healed, as no one is. The show depicts her having flashbacks due to sudden loud noise, shaking hand the first few times she has to fight for her safety instead of training with her dad, and snapping at friends when they bring up Blake, the person she lost her arm trying to save (who, near immediately after ran away due to feeling she was endangering those she loved, furthering Yang's already present abandonment issues.) It isn't done perfectly but the intentions and general message sent are extremely positive and honest. She struggles less as the show progresses, and there are opportunities to consider herself less for being disabled or "become whole again" but she explicitly refutes these ideas and says that's she's better because of her failures and losses, and isn't any less whole. Her becoming disabled is also extremely tied to her being LGBT, because, as previously mentioned, she lost her arm protecting her then friend and partner, now girlfriend, directly after the villain who cut her arm off told her love interest that he would "destroy everything [she] love[s]. (Camera pans to Yang, he looks at her.) Starting with her." LIKE. He attacked her BECAUSE Blake cared for her so much and Yang ran to her defense blindly BECAUSE she loved Blake so much. When they reunite, they struggle with communication because Yang feels Blake is seeing her as weak, and through several things, mostly a climatic battle against the man who severed Yang's arm, they affirm each other as equals. I can go on but this is already too long. YANG SWEEP!!!!!

Yang lost her arm while protecting her best friend and future girlfriend from said girlfriend's abusive ex. Had a whole arc about learning to live with that loss and dealing with PTSD. Is totally devoted to and in love with Blake Belladonna and is just the sweetest but most badass character in the show.

She's one of the main characters, and just finished a 10 year slow burn romance. Plus, she has both physical and mental disabilities, but is never treated as lesser or incomplete.

Yang Xiao Long was one of the first examples of a sapphic character I ever saw in animated media with her character journey in the show being an iconic part of my teenage years and current young adulthood. The loss of her arm after a traumatic event in the show's 3rd volume was one of the big shockers of the show that nobody saw coming. Since then the show has done an amazing job in exploring both the mental and physical effects of her losing a limb, gaining a prosthetic arm and the recovery journey. Her character also has a major arc regarding handling her PTSD from both this and her past most notably in the 5th and 6th volume. Her character also has a slow-burn romance with her teammate and fellow main character Blake Belladonna which is one of my fave romances ever (it has everything: canon soulmates, friends to lovers, sunshine x grump,battle couple etc..) that has recently became CANON BABIEE!!! There are MULTIPLE characters in RWBY with various disabilities that are handled well in the narrative but i would say Yangs definitely the top FAVE!

Eda Clawthorne-The Owl House

Qualifications:

She has a magical chronic disorder which has flare-ups, is mitigated by taking medication (potions), and has similar side effects to many real disorders such as fatigue, greying hair, and physical impairment (drains magic, a natural ability of *most witches). Unlike in other stories however, her condition is NOT ever completely cured. It does evolve and become more manageable over the course of the story, but she still experiences symptoms from it. Eda also loses one of her arms later in the story. She does get a replacement hook, but it is never shown whether she has a functional prosthetic or not. Most likely, she only has one fully functioning arm after this. As for being queer, she is in a relationship with a nonbinary person and is all but confirmed bisexual (has a secret box with the bi flag on it seriously why else would she have this). Also the owl house has a Lot of queer characters in it and I mean. just look at her. I would be surprised if she wasn't queer somehow.

Bisexual, and has a curse that affects her day to day life

Has canonically dated both men and a non-binary person. Her curse affects her ability to use magic (and at one point outright stops it), which is very important in witch life. Said curse also causes her body parts to fall off sometimes. Many have said her curse is like a metaphor for depression but really it's more like a magic version of a physical disability (although I wouldn't be surprised if she actually also had depression).

One of the things I love about TOH is that they portray a lot of different types of trauma, and not only that but they also show how everyone’s trauma is still trauma, even if it’s “not that big”. You have physical and emotional abuse portrayed with Hunter, right next to bullying and loneliness with Gus and Willow. You have years of built up trauma and emotional manipulation with Amity, along with loss of a loved one and the trauma that comes from being different with Luz. You have years of chronic pain, disability, and possibly ptsd with Eda, right next to being a kid during a war with King and The Collector. Not to mention the packages of pain that are Raine and Camila!

And nobody’s trauma is portrayed or treated as less than or unimportant, and I really like that because I think too often people will dismiss their struggles because “oh well, someone out there has it so much worse”. When like, yeah that one person may be drowning in an ocean of trauma, but people can and have drowned in pools or even buckets. So don’t think you’re struggles aren’t real or that it’s not enough suffering to be addressed-you deserve healing too.

Luz's scar is Honestly an annoying detail to me for how pointless it is.

Because it literally serves no character or story purpose but it technically exists so we can call attention to it but its kinda pathetic tbh if it was meant to represent a battle scar

like its more comparable to this scar I've had on my lower lip due to an accident I had when I was a toddler that left me with a scar that's a straight line that goes down on my lower lip

but like this scar is just the type of thing that's literally had no impact on my life in terms of psychological scars or self esteem or just societal judgment.

soooooo frankly I don't see what the point of it was? if they wanted Luz to have some type of battle scar and maybe have it tie into her having ptsd or something then that'd be great

but giving her a tiny eye brow scratch just seems like the definition of pointless tbh like Eda can lose a fricking arm Hunter can get severe scarring over his face and body

and Raine can get facial scarring but with Luz they just give her a tiny scar that isn't even mentioned and doesn't effect her character design at all.

like I said my opinion is they should have either gone with something big and had it mean something like have her end up with something a lot more noticeable and have it serve to help her development

like if it kept reminding her of her role in helping Belos and thus played into her depression at the start of season 3 until she eventually learned to live with it.

or just don't bother but having it be there so people can make some BS claim that she has a battle scar as a physical reminder of her experiences when she really doesn't just kinda screams pointless to me.

Its the same issue I have with Hunter's scarring and Eda's arm its just pointless injuries the impact of which on the characters doesn't actually get explored

making them nothing more than angsty moments and different character designs and in Luz's case its just strange giving her this tiny permanent scratch

like I said they should have either gone big and had her get scarring that actually meant something and tied into her character arc or just not bothered.

this one's the main plotty one and also the best snuggly one, on account of there being a 10k chapter that's literally just hunter and luz in bed together. snuggling. and arguing with each other. also several snuggling moments prior to that, except they inevitably turn into fights 😔

camila fic! she gets to the isles just in time to witness her daughter's case of Holy Shit PTSD. luz has Scary Dog Privilege and hunter is also being her service dog. best of both worlds. he wants to kill for her and also holds her through an emotional meltdown to end all meltdowns. A+

amity POV of hunter finding out belos is dead! features an extremely choice scene where hunter hugs luz with all the "I Fucking Thought You Were Dead" fervor in the world & amity is like um. this feels indecent to watch. i can't even look at you two anymore

eda meets luz! hunter is absent for most of this one because eda decides she doesn't like him. however he comes in clutch when luz has a panic attack & eda is like oh. huh. maybe you aren't the devil. face touching as allyship forever

this one's a shorter version of the plotty fic, which i wrote first & then had to expand upon bc i had brainworms. the snuggling is short because of this but hunter does hold luz while she cries into his chest. kiddos

6. some synergy had fallen in place

you'd THINK this fic wouldn't have hunter and luz snuggling in it, because luz isn't actually present. this is the only fic luz isn't in. because it's amity POV and about her changing relationship with hunter. however i actually did manage to get some snuggling in there through amity thinking about what it's like to sleep in the same space as hunter & luz. it's like. nauseatingly tender. waow

The Golden Two AU!

When Luz is about 4, while Manny and Camila are taking a nap, she wanders away. She goes into the shack near her house and *gasp!* The portal is there while Eda does Eda things. So Luz goes through the portal.

Cut to Hunter and Belos. Belos is somewhat panicking because, Holy shit, they don't usually pop out this early. I headcanon that Grimwalkers usually pop out at ages 10-12 because like, still an easy age to manipulate, but a lot easier to deal with than someone younger. However, Hunter (always the odd one out) popped out at the ripe old age of 5. Belos doesn't have a single fucking clue on how to deal with small children, so he's just... Sending Hunter out with whatever coven scout pisses him off because apparently this weak ass 5 year old is too small to start training and will be until he's like. At least 8.

So Hunter is out and sees Luz. And he's super excited to see someone around his age, because all the people in the Emperor's Coven are oldddddd. And they're fast friends until Hunter sees Luz's ears and he's like.

Hunter: Woahhhh, youw eaws awe wound!

Luz: Yah

Hunter: Do you wanna meet my uncle? I wanna sow him youw cool eaws

Luz: Oki

So he takes her to Belos who's like. Why is another random child here- Holy shit that's a human!!!! So Belos is then like. Well. Hunter seems to like her. And he'll probably be easier to deal with if he has a friend. And it's not like it's uncommon for me to train the magicless. It might be different because she's a human, but that's all the more reason to keep her! Plus, two Golden Guards? Both of which, now that I think about it, will probably be more obedient if they've had training from a younger age... This will work out well, I think. Probably. Maybe.

So he keeps both of them!

(He tells Luz that she was born from a literal half witch, that she's half human, half witch, (which is why she has no magic and her ears are round) but that her mom died in child birth and her dad followed soon after as an unprotected human in the Boiling Isles. He says that Hunter's family, always so kind, adopted her before being killed by the evil wild magic!)

At first, he's harsher on Hunter, because Come on, Luz is human, not evil like these demons! but because she's younger and understands less, she's more rebellious than Hunter. So the abuse is now on both of them. And anyways, some humans are just evil like those creatures! If she's in the Boiling Isles, it's probably fate anyway! Not trickery like it was with that wretched witch who mind controlled his brother- he's getting off track.

So Luz grows up in the same tiring, abusive, and unhealthy environment as Hunter, but with one change from Hunter's treatment in main canon. Belos realizes that if he punishes one Golden Guard for the others mistakes, it has much more effect on both. Of course, if one does really well, he gives them validation like a loving uncle, even if the other one does badly. And of course he still punishes them individually for minor mistakes! But for worse mistakes? He forces them to watch as he hurts their sibling for their mistakes. (He does still hurt them afterwards, because while most of the time he's faking with not having control over the curse, when he gets really angry, he does actually lose some control.)

This leads Luz and Hunter to both have incredible self hatred, because instead of just thinking that they deserve the punishment they get, they also have to watch someone else suffer for their stupid mistakes. One of the only people they actually care about, no less. So they're even more under Belos' control then Hunter in the actual series with the combined guilt, fear, and concern for their sibling keeping them in line.

Hunter is basically just... Hunter in canon but more compassionate towards Luz. That and being even more brainwashed by Belos, somehow.

Luz is kinda herself in the show? Like, she still copes with humor and all that, but her jokes are a lot darker. She joins Hunter in the PTSD squad. She's terrified of upsetting authority and terrified of failing. She hates herself even more than she does in show, so now she will freak out horribly whenever someone (other than Hunter) is concerned for her because she doesn't deserve this, it's her fault this happened, she's a parasite

I mean. they're all ND to me. Luz with the obvious ADHD, but I'd also tack on autism, anxiety, and depression. Amity is autistic, from her father's side. Hunter I'd pin as autistic, and the clear PTSD, though that's an acquired trait. Maybe anxiety or depression as well, but those might just be symptoms of said PTSD. I also like the idea of him having BPD or another personality disorder, though I wouldn't say it's canon-based. Gus as autistic, maybe also ADHD. Willow actually seems pretty normal? Maybe depression.

Who else... I'm thinking Camila is also autistic and has anxiety. I really love the idea of Belos being autistic, but he channeled that into really horrible outlets. I think King is probably neurotypical and just a child. Eda has ADHD. That's pretty much it.

this is a lot of diagnosing, but hey, this is a very neurodivergent show

💙 Despite the controversial origins of the holiday, Luna has grown to thoroughly enjoy Nightmare Night. She’s super competitive during the games and challenges presented during the celebration, especially Ponyville’s annual costume contest. The more extravagant, time-consuming, and creepier the costume is, the better. She’ll start prepping it weeks, even months in advance to ensure her spot as number one.

💙 Her mane is like a black hole. She can store whatever she pleases inside it, similarly to Eda from The Owl House. The issue that comes with this unique feature is... it’s never guaranteed you’ll get your stuff back after it’s been consumed by the Almighty Hair God. She’s pleaded with her kids numerous times not to use her mane as a fort during hide-and-go-seek—who knows if they’ll ever come back out.

Might as well make a list of fun (sad/horrific) things to explore. Headcanons for the motivation I have to write with. Like a reminder list.

Eda has C-PTSD from all the shit that's happened to her, and maybe BPD too

She still struggles with depression after the show. Her life just doesn't suck half as bad anymore

Massive SI pre-ending that got worse in the time skip

All she has is nightmares, she doesn't dream (that's basically canon)

She's always tired and fluctuates between insomnia and extreme exhaustion that makes it hard to keep her eyes open.

She has had so many panic attacks. Eda is pretty prone to them. She's actually quite an anxious person

What Gwen did for all those years was abuse. Like, emotionally that would fuck anyone up. Same with Lilith

Eda forgives easily in perspective to the crime done to her because she's terrified of being alone. She doesn't see anyone putting in the work to actually make things right with her and stay with her because she's so "difficult to love" so she leaves the door open to her heart constantly

Having detachable limbs has saved her from her mother's "cures" more than once

She's had so many horrible exs, and she chose to date some of them to feel something other than alone and numb. Eda thought she really deserved it with some of them

Eda has spent so long not crying or getting angry when she really wants to, so when she can cry or be angry, it surprises her

She's touch starved and gets separation anxiety from her family now

Eda doesn't feel pain the same anymore. Her threshold is so high that she could break a rib or have internal bleeding and not notice. Really not notice. That's not a curse thing, that's her body adapting to agony for decades

She flinches at loud noises behind her. She flinches during arguments with people. She's on the offence so she doesn't have to be on the defence and Raine points that last bit out to her because they're determined to show her she's safe with them

Eda will start crying over something and not be able to stop. She's super emotionally disregulated

Eda can't sleep for the longest time after the events of the show without being held. Doesn't matter who. She has to hold or be held and not be alone.

Raine spends a lot of nights spooning and doing protective cuddles because Eda falls asleep the fastest that way, and they're worried about her sleeping

Making money was hard at multiple points in her life, even with the door, so she was used to skipping meals to let King, and then Luz, eat and she doesn't see anything wrong with skipping multiple meals in a row. Raine, Lilith, everyone is so concerned, and Raine has to insist that she's maybe making the curse worse this way from the stress of starvation

Raine gently pulls Eda aside to talk about what she tried to do in the woods that day and they check to see if she still feels the same and Eda starts crying. Not because she is, but because she's overwhelmed
